“Mixing Frozen 2- Into the Unknown” - Arranged and performed by Leiki Ueda.

An epic piano solo arrangement of “Frozen 2 - Into the Unknown” performed by Leiki Ueda, which I had the pleasure of mixing. For this piece, I decided to go for a colder piano tone since the location of the movie is based around ice. The warm frequencies were attenuated to reveal more top end presence and shimmer. A second pair of microphones were blended in during the chorus sections to add more excitement.

“Fractured” - composed by kate neal and performed by Monash art ensemble

I had the pleasure of recording this composition at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University and mixing it. The challenge with the recording setup was getting a suitable amount of direct sound from the instruments as well as having the microphone bleed blending together cohesively. Omnidirectional microphones were a top choice, placed in close proximity to the instruments, as well as ribbon microphones (figure 8) on the brass instruments. No equalisation was used except for the strings.

Percussive drums recording

Inspired by Hans Zimmer's large percussion sounds, this piece was composed for four drum kits and synthesizers.

11/8 time signature has been a frequent choice in my past works which experimented with irregular rhythmic patterns but still maintaining familiarity. In this piece, the rhythmic patterns were designed to create unease and edginess.

Classical PIano Recording

The recording was Liszt Transcendental  Etude No.5 performed by Hanford Lam on a Steinway piano as part of a submission for a competition.

A pair of AKG 414s in cardioid pattern was used to capture the closeness and Neumann U87s in omni pattern was used to capture the room.

Blending the the two pairs with compression on the close microphones successfully captured the high frequencies in the dynamic sections, but also highlighted the detail and clarity in the intimate sections.

Omelette at the Jazzlab

The recording was a live performance by Omelette at the Jazzlab in Melbourne.

An SM57 was used on the trombone, two AKG 414 for drum overheads and SM57 for the kick, two RODE NT5s for the piano and two Avantone CK1s for the percussions.

Daniel Tan's work on several of my creative projects has been incredible! His enthusiastic demeanour, flexibility and creative initiative has always made working with Daniel an absolute pleasure! I'd recommend him unequivocally!   - Jordan Murray

THe Spectre Bride

The Spectre Bride is a series of short pieces for bass clarinet and piano composed by Annie Pirotta. The series commences with a dramatic solo bass clarinet opening.

A Neumann M147 and two AKG 414s were used to capture the detail of the instrument.

“Stroll” - Piano/Synth Composition

A cinematic-atmospheric composition for piano and synthesisers. The composition began by creating an eerie sounding piano loop, using close microphones on an upright piano. A combination of digital and analog synthesisers were then added to create textures.
